9/5-9/11/10--Cuban Pewee, Miami-Dade County, Everglades National Park,
Long Pine Key. Observers: Larry Manfredi, M.ob. Directions: From Florida
City, go west on SR 9336/Palm Drive/SW 34 Street to entrance of ENP
($10.00 fee). Follow main road for approx. 4.0 miles to Long Pine Key.
Turn left in about1.5miles, look for small white house on right. Drive
past house staying to the right, look for parking spaces on left. Park
here and walk back towards the white house. Pewee was first observed
behind house and to the right of the house. Then north or back up the
road to the hammock right next to the road. Very important is the call
of the Pewee: It has a very distinct "dee, dee, dee, dee, dee" call with
the song a faster series of the call note. Pewee has been observed
throughout the day; with morning and late afternoon being best. Birders
please be advised that playing of tapes or I-pods to attract wildlife is
against National Park rules.
