2/4/12--Two Green-tailed Towhees, Pinellas County, Safety Harbor,
Possum Branch Preserve. Observers: m.ob. Directions: From intersection
of US 19 and SR 60 in Clearwater, go east on SR 60 to McMullen Booth
Road (CR 611). [From I-275 in Tampa, take CR 589 (Memorial Highway) to
SR 60 (Courtney Campbell Causeway), then go west to McMullen Booth Road
in Clearwater.] Turn north and go past Main Street in Safety Harbor to
just north of Mease Countryside Hospital (3231 McMullen Booth Rd.) The
entrance to the Preserve is just before reaching Curlew Road
(CR586-DeLORME p. 82). There is no sign on CR611, but there's a small
pull-off for parking and beyond that a closed gate with small sign. From
entrance walk straight back 150-200 yards to end of gravel road. Go left
and head for a yellow post on the wetland side of the wide grass strip.
Just past is an earthen/sunken block old boat ramp, and about 10 yards
past the boat ramp along the brush line are two small open areas where
seed is being placed for towhees. Also watch for Lincoln's and
Grasshopper sparrows, and Hispid Cotton Rat coming to seed.
